Prof. Dr. Alper Murat Ulaşlı, Chief Physician of Romatem Ankara Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Center, invited parents to be careful about scoliosis, which can occur at any age, but is most common during adolescence and mostly in girls. Parents should pay attention to their children's shoulder and hip alignment and observe their backs regularly. Scoliosis is not only a visual problem. It puts pressure on the lungs and causes shortness of breath. We recommend a three-dimensional exercise method to solve this problem," Prof. Dr. Alper Murat Ulaşlı told Hürriyet: "Our spine is like a bridge that extends from our head to our legs and carries most of our body weight and is our basic support system. Scoliosis is a three-dimensional curvature deformity of the spine. It occurs at all ages, from newborn babies to the elderly. We often diagnose it without any cause, usually during the developmental age of 10-15 years.
Scoliosis Pressure Causes Shortness of Breath
It is about 8-10 times more common in girls than in boys. The first symptom of scoliosis is usually back pain. In addition, changes in the physical appearance of the person can be observed. Inequality in shoulder levels, prominence of the lower end of the shoulder blade, hump in the back when leaning forward, flattening of the lumbar curve on one side are some of these. If not intervened, scoliosis causes uneven loading on the spine. This damages the joints over time. In advanced degrees, numbness and weakness may occur due to nerve compression. Shortness of breath may accompany this as a result of pressure on the lungs.
We diagnose scoliosis with X-rays and a detailed physical examination. The 4D Scoliosis Analyzer is one of the innovative methods used in scoliosis diagnosis and aims to create a four-dimensional model of the patient's spine. This analysis gives us physicians a more comprehensive view of the patient's posture, spinal motion, spinal shape and shoulder alignment. We categorize scoliosis treatment as scoliosis-specific exercise, bracing and surgery. The degree and type of curvature and the age of the person are important for determining the treatment method. For curves up to 25 degrees, we follow scoliosis-specific exercise therapy. In adult scoliosis patients, we can also apply corset treatment together with exercise. However, corset treatment should be considered as an auxiliary method to exercise and physical therapy for a short-term period. Curvatures above 40 degrees may require surgical approaches. In physical therapy and rehabilitation, we apply scoliosis-specific exercises to reduce the degree of curvature and stop its progression. At the same time, we teach the correct use of the corset during the physical therapy process and ensure the application of in-corset exercises.
This increases the effectiveness of the corset and reduces the side effects of its misuse. The Schroth method is a three-dimensional exercise method specific to scoliosis. With this method, we aim to increase the patient's body awareness, to ensure the rotation of the spine and to correct muscle posture asymmetries by working the lung at full capacity with the help of special breathing techniques. Specific to this treatment, we use mirrors, therapy balls, rice bags, poles and Schroth rods to increase the body awareness of the person. We plan the Schroth exercise program, which can be done standing, sitting and lying down, individually for the patient. Although the duration of treatment varies according to the patient, we recommend that children continue until bone development is complete and that home exercise programs are performed regularly.
